Easy Melodies for One String

Each of these 32 tunes is designed to be played on one string, so it is perfect for the player who is just beginning to read music. For those folks who are intimidated by sight reading, this can be a nice stress-free first step. You will need all the fingers of your left hand, but you don’t have to worry about string crossings.

Once you have learned a melody on one string, it’s an easy matter to change the key. Just use the same finger pattern on one or more of your other strings.

This collection features traditional melodies from America, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Serbia, and Slovakia.

Reviews...

While this book is set up for beginners, Greenblatt has chosen to highlight both popular American fiddle tunes (“Boil Them Cabbage,” “Go Tell Aunt Rhody”) as well as simple international songs from Mexico, Serbia, and Slovakia, among other countries. The idea here is that there are many songs to practice on with a single string without being redundant. Moreover, this will assist in the learning of sight reading for those used to training by ear. There are also companion books for viola and cello available for situations with beginner duets or quartets, although keys may be different.

Easy Melodies for One String for Viola is a fun, stress-free first step in sight-reading. Using all fingers, there’s no need to worry about string crossings. Once you capture the tune, you can then use the same finger patterns on other strings, creating traditional melodies from America, Croatia, Mexico and many more. The One String books are also available for violin and cello.”

“When a cellist hears of a melody to be played on one string, we usually think of the Paganini Variations in One String on a Theme by Rossini. However, this collection of pieces is not for the advanced cellist but for the beginner player. These have been compiled by Deborah Greenblatt, a violin teacher who resides in Nebraska. Part of a series called Easy Melodies for One String, the book includes over 30 traditional melodies from America, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Serbia, and Slovakia. Most of the pieces are under 16 bars and in user-friendly keys. The book includes pieces such as Hot Cross Buns, Mary Had a Little Lamb, Peas Porridge Hot and Babylon’s Falling. There are no bowings or fingerings, but lots of space to write these in. The book is handily ring bound and makes a very suitable book of sight-reading exercises for young cellists.”
